Design Without Commercial Utility Is Self-Indulgence
There is a comfortable belief in our industry that beautiful work justifies itself. We do not share it. A brand identity that wins admiration and changes nothing on the balance sheet has not done its job.
The first half of the conviction
Design is a commercial instrument. It exists to make a company easier to trust, easier to choose and easier to remember. When it is judged only by taste, it drifts towards whatever the designer finds interesting. When it is judged by what it does for the business, it becomes sharper — and, in our experience, usually more beautiful as well.
The second half
The reverse is equally true. Marketing without artistic distinction is an inefficient use of capital. A campaign that looks like every other campaign must buy all of its attention at full price. Distinctive work is noticed and remembered for less.
Why we keep them together
This is the reason creative direction and marketing management sit under one mandate at Royal Ink. Separate them, and each optimises for its own measure. Keep them together, and the creative is accountable for performance while the media is worthy of the brand.
